    FORUM ETIQUETTE

    General Statements

While debating and discussion is fine, we will not tolerate invective (abusive speech) and/or harassment, personal attacks or purposeless inflammatory posts, or posting mis-information in the title of a thread . Our decision is final in these matters. Expect that these types of posts will be removed. Please use your report button if you read a post that you believe is offensive and state your reason why. It will be dealt with in as expeditious a manner as possible.

Name-calling is invective. Deriding an opinion is not. You may attack an opinion as idiotic, but you may not call a member an idiot. There's a difference. One is meant to attack an opinion, the other attacks the member himself. HOWEVER, IF YOU RESPOND TO INVECTIVE WITH INVECTIVE, YOU LOSE YOUR RIGHT TO SEEK MODERATOR INTERVENTION.

This forum is equipped with a word censor. If the censor replaces your word with ***, please do not type around the censor by using dollar signs for an S or any similar method. The use of terms like 'F'in', OMFG, 'F' this, or other abbreviations is considered just another form of avoiding the censor. Threads or posts containing such material may be edited or deleted at the discretion of the moderating team.

Please refrain from posting meaningless threads, one word (or short) non-sense posts. Moderators will delete these threads at their discretion.

If you inadvertently double post, please take a moment to delete the extra post by clicking on "Edit".

Product advertising and spamming are not allowed. This includes using the forum email and Private message system to spam other members. If you receive PM spam or offensive PM, please email it to info@bills.nfl.com

We also do not allow posts, avatars or signatures making explicit statements about sexual orientation, or that contain sexual lewdness or vulgarities in nature. The buffalobills.com team shall be the sole mediator of what does and what does not violate community standards.

Please refrain from posting sexually explicit pictures and/or discussion in posts. "Explicit" pertains to sexually explicit or implicit (hardcore/softcore pornography, animated pictures, written language, etc.) content. Use discretion, and err on the side of caution in instances where material you are considering posting might be considered “over the line.”

A significant quantity of our traffic visits occur during work hours, are made in public environments, and are made by individuals less than 18 years of age. Bear these factors in mind when considering posting sexually-related content.

Discussion of illegal activities such as sopcast, software and music piracy, and other intellectual property violations are not allowed.

While we expect to have some criticism of the Buffalo Bills players, management, staff, cheerleaders and moderators, we will not tolerate blatant attacks towards these individuals. You may attack the actions or decisions of individuals, but do not attack the individuals themselves. We will not tolerate invective or vitriol, or anything we believe crosses the line between criticism and abusive language. The Ownership, Coaching, Player, and Staff Cheerleaders, and Moderating Staff should be accorded the same respect that the posters on the forum are accorded - nothing more, but nothing less. You may attack the actions or decisions of individuals, but do not attack the individuals themselves. This issue will be strictly enforced.

We reserve the right to remove posts we deem offensive without notice. Any topics/posts of these types will be deleted without notice.

On line TYPING IN ALL CAPS is considered shouting and is frowned on in most cases. Excessive shouting will be deleted. Repeated offenses could lead to being banned from the forum. You may use a WORD or a PHRASE TO EMPHASIZE a point, but typing entire posts in all capital letters will be deemed a violation of the Code of Conduct and dealt with according.

Please do not use the QUOTE function that repeat posts which violate the Code of Conduct. All posts which do so will be completely removed by moderators no matter what content may also be included in that particular post. Quotation of posts which violate the Code of Conduct will also be considered a violation of acceptable standards on this board and will be dealt with the same action taken toward the initiator of the original violation. This is a problem which is taken seriously by moderators as it causes the necessity to delete repeated posts and disrupts the flow of an otherwise quality discussion.

Each member is allowed one login account. Registering with multiple accounts is not allowed. Any member attempting to log in under another username after suspension from the board will have their account deleted and no longer be able to participate in the forums.

ADDENDUM 10/31/11: Religious or Political discussions will no longer be permitted in ANY forum. Attempts in the past to control these discussions have proven to be too difficult to moderate on a football web site. Please find other forums on the Internet that are more appropriate for those types of discussion.

    Thread Guidelines

There will be a 25 post count minimum before you may start a new thread. This is intended to keep the message boards clear of trolls whose sole intent is to join the board for a short time with the sole purpose of creating inflammatory topics, posts, or comments. Please note that posting nonsense and spam posts to reach the 25 post minimum is not allowed.

When you start a new thread, please think about which area the thread you are about to start actually belongs in. It seems most people tend to place threads in the General Discussions (GD) forum. However, with a forum this large we may find it necessary to move the thread to another sub-forum to help keep the GD from getting overly cluttered. It will be our sole discretion if we choose to move a thread. Remember that every thread added will force another thread off of page one and they tend to be forgotten after they leave page one.

One of the goals of moderators is to prevent the board from being cluttered by repetitive threads. If you create a thread on a topic that is already being discussed in another current thread, it is likely your thread will be merged with the older thread or possibly deleted. If your thread has vanished and was not in violation of forum rules, look for a longer thread with the same subject matter. It's likely you'll find your posts there. Remember, we reserve the right to remove posts which are in violation of forum rules without notice with the purpose of keeping quality discussions on the front page of the forum.

We also reserve the right to take punitive action, up to and including permanent suspension of account, against any member who does not abide by the forum rules. While suspension is a last-resort for members we deem are refusing to abide by the rules, we reserve the right to suspend trolls or new members without warning if we believe their intent is to troll or in some other way willfully break forum rules.

Also while these rules cover most common situations, they cannot anticipate everything. Consequently we reserve the right to take any actions we deem appropriate to ensure these forums are not disrupted or abused in any way.

We reserve the right to amend these rules at any time, without notice. Any and all rule changes will be posted, and all members are expected to abide by any and all rule-changes from the moment those rule-changes are posted. It is the responsibility of the member to read announcements and abide by the forum rules. Ignorance of the rules is not an excuse for breaking them."

    Specific Guidelines

    1. Each visitor may own a single registered account. The Buffalo Bills staff screens and approves all new accounts. Duplicate accounts are prohibited, and the staff employs security measures to enforce this policy. Duplicate accounts will immediately closed (i.e., banned). Do not create additional registered accounts to bypass an issued ban; absent compelling circumstances, any attempt to circumvent a ban by registering a secondary account will result in a permanent banishment of all related accounts.

    2. Use discretion in selecting an appropriate username. We strongly advise against registering inappropriate usernames, including, but not limited to, racial slurs, profanity and vulgarity (explicit or implicit). New user accounts with inappropriate usernames will be not be activated. Offenders will be contacted by the Moderating Staff and advised to select an appropriate username or risk having the account banned or deleted.

Registration of user names of actual Buffalo Bills coaches, players, media, or front office personnel is prohibited. If you are not Bubba Tyer, do not register that as your user name. You may pick a name like "Lee Evans Fan 83", but you may not JUST use the name of a coach, player, media person, or front office personnel. The reason for this is that we have been contacted by players, as well as agents and other staff members who do not want ONLY their names used as usernames by anyone other than themselves.

Regardless of your choice of user name, posting in a way that suggests some association, relationship, employment or any other affiliation (including statements expressing your identity is that of a player, owner, coach, executive, former player, etc.) should be avoided until your identity is verified by a member of the Buffalo Bills Staff. Please use the CONTACT US form if you wish to post as an “insider” so we can verify your identity and assure credibility to your words.

    3. Spam is strictly prohibited. The following examples constitute spam:

    * Very short posts that do not add value to the topic. Example: posts with only the words, "i dunno," or "lol cool," can be considered spam. If that is the only contribution you make to the discussion, this is not the place for you.
    * Double Posting. A double post constitutes back-to-back posts by the same member. The second post may be considered spam. If you submit a post and realize that you have made a mistake or would like to elaborate further, please use the "edit" button/function (located at the lower right of each post) to edit the original post rather than create a new one for that purpose. An exception to the rule applies to a situation where a member wants to address the content of separate individual posts from different members. For example, the first point addresses the content of member A's post; the subsequent post addresses the content of member B's post.

Please note that advertisements, chain letters, pyramid schemes, and solicitations are inappropriate and unacceptable on any of our forums. Any post that is deemed to be spam may result in the immediate and permanent ban of the member making that post.

    4. Please post your message in the appropriate forum. Familiarize yourself with each forum description. Please be considerate and respectful to our visitors who frequent particular forums to gain knowledge on particular topics. Resist the temptation to post irrelevant topics on an inappropriate forum to achieve a wider audience. Moderators may move your post if it more relevant to another forum.

    5. Please be respectful of your fellow members. Every registered member agrees, upon registration, not use these forums to post material or topics which are knowingly false, defamatory, deceptive, inaccurate, racist, insulting, abusive, inflammatory, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually graphic, physically threatening, invasive of another's privacy or otherwise in violation of any law, including stalking or otherwise harassing individual members.

Personal attacks or threats will not be tolerated. As mentioned in the general guidelines, go after the idea, not the poster. Free debate within the parameters outlined herein is welcome on these forums, and diversity of opinion lies at the heart of a good debate. Toward that end, every member is free to have their own opinion so long as it is expressed in a civil manner, is within the subject matter topic of the forum and does not otherwise violate forum rules.

    6. Once again, do NOT attempt to circumvent the profanity filters. Let the filters do their job. Veiled profanity is unacceptable. We allow the use of either all asterisks/symbols or not at all. For example "****" and "*&*%$" are acceptable, while “s**t” or “sh*t" are not.

    7. You are not a moderator so do not correct posters as if you were a moderator. If a thread or post violates the rules, use the "Report This Post" button rather than playing the parent. Editorial comments on the value of a thread or post, such as "useless thread", "in before the lock", "this thread should be closed", etc., are not welcome. This also may be considered spam, as it adds nothing to the discussion, and furthermore as thread hijacking and taking the thread off topic. If you don't like a thread and it doesn't break any rules don't reply to it! More often than not, that causes more problems than it fixes. Let us handle what is ours to handle.

    8. If you disagree with something the moderators did, fine, disagree and let us know, but do it politely through PM or email ONLY. Complaining on the forums is not permitted nor is discussing an infraction for any reason. Attacking or flaming a moderator via PM or in the open forums is subject to a Moderator Abuse infraction. Be respectful and considerate. Profanity and abusive conduct is not tolerated. Discussion of how individual moderators do his/her job is also prohibited and is subject to a moderator abuse infraction.

    9. Ensure the topic you wish to initiate a thread about hasn’t already been posted. If you are reporting Buffalo Bills "news" or "rumors" more than a few hours old, please use the Search Feature or scan the first two pages of the forum before posting, to ensure the news hasn't already been posted and the topic discussed. Multiple topics will be closed or merged. This is a very large and active community, with sweeping media coverage and up-to-the-minute updates. More than likely, if the news is older than a few hours, the information has already posted and is subject of active debate. If you wish to discuss that topic, you are encouraged to do so in the existing thread.

    10. Please use descriptive and accurate subject titles for your posts. Adherence to this rule assists visitors in utilizing discretion when selecting content to read. It also serves to notify members if a particular topic has already been posted and discussed, and potentially prevents multiple threads being started on the same topic.

    11. False posts or misleading subject titles are prohibited. Deception at the expense of the audience devalues the medium and the content it provides. Violation of this rule is regarded as a serious offense.

    12. When posting anything concerning news articles from outside sources, please include a direct link (i.e., URL) to the origination page/site. Please paste the URL directly atop the post, (for example, the lead paragraph or a particular sentence or two) . Such a practice provides credibility and attribution to the source of the information, and allows visitors the option to visit the respective websites. You are responsible for the content you post.

If you are posting a published article from a news source, please title your thread in the following format: "SOURCE SHORTFORM: HEADLINE" (Ex. WP: Bills Sign RB Dominic Rhodes).

    13. Again, please do not use the “Quote” feature to quote huge blocks of text or pictures or posts that violate the Code of Conduct. If you would like to respond to the contents of a particular post, simply quote the sentence or idea that you're commenting upon, not necessarily the entire post. It wastes space on the database and unnecessarily extends and clutters threads. Also, do not alter a quotes from another poster.

    14. No trolling. Do not post messages that are inflammatory and serve solely to incite fellow members. The Buffalo Bills message board will begin to enforce a zero tolerance policy for the common internet troublemaker. Trolls will be identified and censured, at the discretion of the Buffalo Bills Moderating Staff, as quickly and efficiently as possible.

    15. Please refrain from posting explicit pictures in posts. "Explicit" pertains to sexually explicit or implicit (hardcore/softcore pornography, animated pictures, written language, etc.) content. Use discretion, and err on the side of caution in instances where material you are considering posting might be considered “over the line.” A significant quantity of our traffic visits occur during work hours, are made in public environments, and are made by individuals less than 18 years of age. Bear these factors in mind when considering posting sexually-related content.

    16. Again, we cannot emphasize it enough, please ALSO refrain from posting sexually explicit pictures in your signature and/or avatars. "Explicit" pertains to sexually explicit or implicit (hardcore/softcore pornography, animated pictures, written language, etc.) content. Use your discretion. There shall be no full/partial frontal or full rear nudity. This rule will be strictly enforced.

    17. Please maintain respectable size signatures within the limitations set herein. Maintaining reasonable size signatures minimizes the amount of load time needed to access a given page. Furthermore, it reduces the amount of excessive scrolling required of users perusing threads.

In addition, signatures should not contain any more than 10 lines of text. The sum total of the height (ie. 200 pixels) INCLUDES text or any combination of images and text.

    18. REFRAIN FROM POSTING ENTIRE POSTS IN ALL CAPITALS. On the internet, posting in all capitals is considered shouting, and as such is considered rude and offensive. Overuse of capital letters also creates a strain on the eyesight, and makes it difficult to read text. Caps should be used to show emphasis for only one or two words or phrases.

    19. Do not create “call out” threads. Threads whose intention is clearly to "call out" another particular member on a personal matter. These forums are not to be used as a medium for personal and/or private vendettas. To the extent personal exchanges/conversations are necessary---and desired by BOTH parties---those members are encouraged to pursue them via Private Messaging. Feel free to question members as to past comments you’d like them to explain in the spirit of good debate. Do not use private messaging to badger or intimidate other members. Substantiated instances of such behavior will result in the immediate loss of private messaging privileges for the instigator, and may result in permanent banning from the Buffalo Bills Message Board.

    20. Adhere to the advice and recommendations of the buffalobills.com staff. Moderators are appointed because they exemplify the characteristics, attitude and values consistent with the standards set for the site. They have been instructed to enforce board rules, guidelines and policies exercising as much restraint as possible, and in such a way to encourage free expression of opinion. They have been entrusted and empowered with the ability and authority to achieve that standard.

The Buffalo Bills message board allows a wide range of discussion. Please refrain from unfounded charges of censorship or other moderator action taken against a member on the grounds a Buffalo Bills Staff member (or team official) simply didn’t like the content of the opinion. We will never remove content from our community based on our personal views of the validity of that opinion. The team will not prevent any communication that is harsh or critical of the team. As a member, if you are engaged for a violation of the rules and happen to have expressed a viewpoint in opposition to that of the Buffalo Bills Staff, the engagement is due to an actual rule violation and not due to the content of the idea. The simple expression of our viewpoints that may be contrary to those of any member is not action against you and should not inspire charges of censorship. Buffalo Bills Staff members have an opinion they are allowed to express too.

These Rules and Guidelines have been promulgated and implemented with the best interest of the community in mind, and with the experience of years of moderating one of the most active and successful sports-related message boards on the web. We thank you for your attention and cooperation in learning and respecting the stricter enforcement of these guidelines and rules.

Although the Buffalo Bills moderating staff pledge to uphold the Rules and Guidelines at all times, due to the size of the membership and high volume of traffic it is impossible for us review every message. We have therefore empowered the general membership with the ability to assist the Moderating Staff by calling possible violations to their attention. The "Report this post to a moderator" function allows members to notify all staff of any particular violations by providing a direct link to the infraction and the opportunity to provide an explanation of the concern.

    Final Thoughts

Thank you for your cooperation with our intent to provide more structure, and stricter rules of conduct than has been the case in the past. It is our goal to improve the overall quality of this message board, and for those who do not abide, nor enjoy the experience of a more tightly moderated message board, we encourage you to find a message board more suitable to your desired experience.

    ***TO FANS OF OPPOSING TEAMS***

This is a website owned by the Buffalo Bills, and maintained by Buffalo Bills fans, and devoted, primarily, to Buffalo Bills football. Please be respectful of that fact, or expect possible deletion of threads deemed to be inflammatory by the Buffalo Bills Moderating Staff and loss of posting abilities.

    8. Please use descriptive and accurate subject titles for your posts. Adherence to this rule assists visitors in utilizing discretion when selecting content to read. It also serves to notify members if a particular topic has already been posted and discussed, and potentially prevents multiple threads being started on the same topic.

    9. False posts or misleading subject titles are prohibited. Deception at the expense of the audience devalues the medium and the content it provides. Violation of this rule is regarded as a serious offense.

    11. Also, do not alter a quote from another poster.
