View Full Version : How about an Argonaut's game at the Ralph?

That would be great. The bench area would probably be shortened.

I'm talking about reciprocation. Don't knock it, have fun with it.

Would anyone go? The Toronto games are going to sell out for sure. The CFL has a hard enough time drawing fans in Canada.

It would be a blast. Of course we'd have to take out thousands of seats to make the field longer and wider, but hey, we'll just charge $250 for the rest of them.

We'd get to see Rich Stubler go up and down the sidelines.

Rich Stubler
Head Coach

http://www.argonauts.ca/Argos/Team/coaches.html

A renowned defensive strategist, Rich Stubler began his CFL coaching career in 1983 when he joined the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, helping lead the team to a Grey Cup Championship in 1986, the first of four in his career. In 1990, Stubler spent one season as defensive coordinator for the Argonauts before joining the Edmonton Eskimos’ coaching staff for five seasons (1991-95), winning his second league championship in 1993. After a two-year stint as Defensive Coordinator at the University of Oregon, he rejoined the Eskimos from 1998-99 before moving on to help the B.C. Lions capture the Grey Cup in 2000.

Over the past five seasons, Stubler’s defence has been virtually impenetrable allowing a league-low 163 touchdowns in 90 regular season games, or 1.81 touchdowns per game.

$250 Canadian for Canadian citizens (with the robust Canadian dollar). ;)

Sounds good -Toronto Argonauts versus Hamilton TigerCats - a great way for the CFL to further "regionalize" it's fan support in the southern sector (aka WNY). Something tells me you won't get away with charging $250 to see a pre-season game though...;)

Maybe after the Bills play 8 games a season in Toronto we can get the Argos to move to Buffalo.

The Buffalo Argos kinda has a nice ring to it.

The first time I saw Canadian football, there was a bad snap which went over the punter's head by a mile. Dude had to run backward and kick the ball out of the end zone for a safety. It was the first time I had seen this play, but it wouldn't be the last.

I eventually saw Brian Moorman do the same thing against Cleveland.

This is a true story.

The CFL has some pretty good talent. Guys that would be 4th string in the NFL. It is better football then NFL europe was.

The QB for the Argo's, was actually ahead of Brady on the depth chart in training camp, when the Pats won the first superbowl

Talent in the 60's and 70's was very comparable to the NFL/AFL

I highly doubt that. The CFL will get NFL safeties that can't get a job and play em at linebacker.

Dude I just got a SWEET idea! If the Bills do move anywhere else, then I will stop following NFL and switch to CFL. I agree that it's not that bad, it's FOOTBALL!

That would be a sweet coup to pull off on Goodell, Jerry Jones, Bellichump, Tom Brady, and all those jerks we would never have to see again!

Who else in the NFL would you just love to never see again? The last 3 are at the top of my list, I think.

Here are some historical anecdotes for your new team:

http://www.argonauts.ca/Argos/History/ArgonautsHistory/2004/06/18/504715.html

he Toronto Juggernaut: 1939-1952

Football in Eastern Canada was abandoned during World War II from 1942-1944 but when play resumed, the Argonauts, coached by Ted Morris, were back - and with a vengeance. Toronto trotted out what many consider to be the best quarterback/wide receiver tandem in professional football - the 'Gold Dust Twins'.

Quarterback Joe Krol and wide receiver Royal Copeland wreaked havoc on opposing defences. Krol had a 'rifle arm' and Copeland weaved magical pass patterns through opposing secondaries, as frustrated defenders found it impossible to cover the elusive receiver.

CFL db's had no trouble keeping up with Andre Rison a couple of season's back, along with few other former NFL or high NFL draft pick receivers. Remember that even Ricky Williams was not even close to being the best RB in the CFL last year. In fact, out of all starting RB's, he was probably close to the bottom of the list. The average CFLer is no worse than the average NFL second stringer. If you follow both games you'll know that. Every NFL team has about 6-10 exceptional athletes, beyond that there's not a lot of difference between the rest of the guys (i.e the 3rd to 6th rounders and free agents). These are the same guys that make up a CFL roster.

Careful what you ask for, or history may repeat itself! In the 50's and 60's, there were CFL vs NFL exhibition games. Check out the scores (particularly 1961):

1950: New York Giants 20, Ottawa Rough Riders 6
1951: New York Giants 38, Ottawa Rough Riders 6
1959: Chicago Cardinals 55, Toronto Argonauts 26
1960: Pittsburgh Steelers 43, Toronto Argonauts 26

You underestimate the cfl. the cfl has a plethora of defensive backs to make up for the four, five and six reciever sets that offenses generally run.

Alien-VS-Lynch
02-01-2008, 02:04 PM
they play 2 differnt sports. cfl has 12 men on the field, 110 yard field, different balls, defensive line has to be 1 yard back from the offensive line, you can motion allyou want, players dont need to be set at the snap, you need 7 men o nthe line but they an be lined up on anyside of the ball where ever they want, bigger endzones, few other thigns i think

if they could agree on rules bewteen the 2 of them, it owudl actually be worht watching.

Of course we are the only NFL team to lose to the CFL....:watching:

- as for a CFL game at the Ralph - it could never happen because there is no way to make the field 10 yards longer and add 10 yards to each end zone. The Ralph isn't made for that.

02-01-2008, 02:19 PM
Interesting idea but I don't think you could fit a CFL regulation size field in the Ralph can you .. I know it is alot wider and longer than an NFL field and it appears to me that the NFL size field take up almost the whole Length at least.

Actually if you look up the records on that, you will see that the games were played with both rules, CFL rules for the first half then NFL rules for the second half. The CFL teams were ahead in most games in the first half, but got their butts kicked in the 2nd half when they went to NFL rules

Yes and no. Most of them are on par with 3rd string NFLers. That is the majority of CFL players. Then you have guys, that for whatever reason, the NFL passed them over for the first time, and they become stars in the CFL, and come back to the NFL and nearly do the same. Guys like Garcia, Flutie, Moon. I personally can't think of any others, but I know there are some out there. The HB for Indy, Grant or whatever his name is, the one that fumbled for em in the playoffs, was in the CFL last year.

CFL was a better product then the European league, I'll say that much. The only thing that gave NFL europe credibility, is the NFL would send 6 players per team there. Most of them were 3rd string developmental players. And they were usually the stars of their teams. Guys in the CFL have dominated NFL Europe and not done so great back in the CFL.

Sometimes it just comes down to how they do at the NFL combine - as to whether they make an NFL team's roster or not....or how they do in pre-season....

Take Moorman for instance - cut twice by Seattle - didn't make an XFL team that he tried out for - did well in NFL Europe and THEN went to the Pro Bowl two times (SO FAR) -

so shouldn't he have made an XFL team?? It's just how you play at any time - or what that team already had on the roster.

The CFL can have every bit as talented players as the NFL - just not in the right place at the right time, etc.

A low-scoring championship game played in a sold-out retractable dome stadium where the defenses dominated, the qb's had their moments, but also made some very poor throws, some nice catches were made, and the game went down to the last play - was that the 2007 Grey Cup or 2008 Super Bowl? Frankly, could be either

Hard to say if anyone would go. Baltimore had a CFL 10 years ago and they drew over 40,000 fans a game. Or course the town was so thirsty for football back then... Actually the CFL had one of the best attendance records for 2007 since 1983.
