Good pick. McKelvin was in many mocks as going in the top 10, many to the Pats at 7.
We got the best CB in the draft. I'm happy with it.

i like the fact he's supposed to be the most physical corner in the draft. that will bode well vs. the Mosses of the NFL.
lack of INTs, is that a problem?
would you take a physical CB over a ball-hawking one??
that's the question.
i'm pretty happy. playing physical is important in Bufffalo.
good pick.

There was no value there for a reciever at 11, there will still be a big WR left in the second, or maybe we will trade up late in the first. I still think Kelley is who we want, but we'll see if he's still there.

I really thought it was gonna be Thomas when they showed someone handing him a phone.

I do like the pick. I did not think he would be there. Maybe OBD did not think he was going to either, hence the trade back talk.
BUT When he was there they took the best CB, with 4 min off the clock, Still hoping for a very nice WR.
Man I could have swore are CBwas going to be Cason
Come back into the First and Get Hardy
with Poz healthy, the free agents we picked up ... now this rookie CB
our defence is going to be fun to watch!!!
and he is a return specialist too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great pick. We needed a Corner and a WR and WRs will be there later.
If we can end up with a Hardy Sweed or Kelly and McKelvin....... We pulled off another Lynch Poz situation!!!!!!
I like Cromartie basically because of what his cousin did. This kid is very good and he is a return guy also so we might not have to use McGee as much.

Woot!! Woooooooooohooooo!
Very, very happy to get the best corner in the draft. We needed help at corner and now we've got it. It was obvious that stopping other teams on third down was a problem last year.... A good corner helps, and this is a good replacement after losing Winfield and Clements in past years.
I really like the way the young secondary is shaping up, and now that we have the big runstuffing dt, the line is better too.... The Defence is gonna improve.
Next pick has to be a big WR (1st priority) or a TE though.... we need that redzone threat.

Thank you....even though he is a good pick regardless where he was taken,I think the bills got sucked in from NE,he was on NE Board very very high and stole him away from NE-big positive.the issue is,he is not very tall in size which didnt make sense but to grade him here is an B just because the Pats didnt get him, there was so many choices they had
thats what im talking about screwing up someone elses draft
good job bills there but need someone with size still & a WR,s
to say the least he will be an awesome Special Teamer right away
WR is up next or trade up if they start falling

The scouting report on Mckelvin
Weaknesses: Is a finesse cover corner. Does not like to support the run and will avoid contact if at all possible. Plays a lot of man-off coverage and needs to improve his ability to press WR's at the line of scrimmage. Bigger WR's usually can dictate their routes.
this does no fit the cover 2 system, someone explain the pick to me i dont get it

Welcome to Buffalo man!

04-26-2008, 05:32 PM
The WR's will still be there when Buffalo picks in the second. In that case, there was no need to trade down. Buffalo gets the best CB in the draft in the first round and at worst gets the draft's 2nd or 3rd WR. I still think Devin might make it to the second round, considering all the needs of other teams. Lots of good quality at other spots. Bills will likely get the WR they want or close in 2nd. Trading down wouldn't have helped much in that case. They coveted McKelvin and got him...period!

I think this is a big mistake, we pick a 5' 10" CB with no vertical when we face Randy moss twice a year. I'm so upset with this pick and it will come back to haunt us. THE PICK WE SHOULD HAVE MADE IS
DOMINIQUE RODGERS-CROMARTIE
He a tall, fast CB, with raw talent and a massive vertical. Mark me words

Pick was good for two reasons:
Got a good Corner to help our secondary. Whitner no longer has to play Nickel Back in most formations and can roam and create plays. Gives him freedom.
Didn't draft that overrated POS in Devin Thomas.

He will mos def. be the nickel back, and give another weapon on special teams. His impact won't be felt quite like Whitner, but he won't be exploited in 3 receiver sets. He can certainly cover a guy like Wes Welker, which is certainly someone who killed this team last year.
love this pick. I totally did not think he would be there at 11.

I was initially upset because of his size; I thought, if we're gonna go CB, get a big one . . .
But now that I've read up a little, I'm starting to warm up to him:
Strengths:
Very athletic...Has good size...Excellent timed speed with a burst to close...A solid tackler...Outstanding footwork...Great hands...Has fluid hips and is smooth in his transition...Natural man coverage skills...True playmaker who is a threat to take it the distance every time he gets his hands on the ball...Also a dynamic return man.
Weaknesses:
1)Relatively marginal instincts and anticipation...2)He doesn't have a lot of experience bumping at the line...3)Could do a better job in zone coverage...4)Too aggressive and plays a little out of control at times..5).Did not always play against elite competition.
http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/cb/leodismckelvin.html
1) and 2) can improve, but only with experience. 3) can be coached. He'll have to take care of 4) on his own - and there's nothing wrong with being aggressive. As for 5), neither did Jerry Rice, so I don't hold that against him.

A top 10-15 player who has an early starting grade - probably as a rookie. McKelvin is capable of matching up with top wideouts now. He could become a fixture in a secondary, in addition to ranking with the game’s best return specialists. He is a solid early first-round pick with the athletic ability and a high level of development to be an impact performer in a few roles. We think eventually he’ll become a Pro Bowl performer.
Real pumped about this pick. we have our corners set for the next5-10 years. now we need a #2 man for lee. its exciting to be a bills fan guys. Get ready for a bomb season.
I absolutely have no problem with this pick because it definitey upgrades our cb's.
I just felt that our receivers are among the worst in the NFL and think we really need to get two very good ones in the draft.
Like I said though nobody expected him to be here either.

McKelvin was a solid pick, BUT, we should have probably traded with somebody who wanted Klaedy(sp?), the OT who went to Denver... He was extremely highly touted, and with what Balt. got for the 8th pick I imagine we could have made out decently and still got on of the top 4 corners

I'm warming up to it. It was our biggest need and we got the best prospect. I cant be upset. I think we can get good value at DT later on with a Pat Sims type. I was surprised by the Mayo pick and upset because I was hoping hed fall to 34 for the Falcons.

here's your character:
"I learned from the mistakes of my brothers," McKelvin said. "I learned from the hard-working example my mom set. I mean, this is very exciting, to become a role model in education for my niece and nephews. That gives me as much motivation as football."
When asked recently in a questionnaire about his proudest moment in football he answered: "Winning and celebrating with my teammates."
gotta love that.
he'll fit in.
and someone said something about him shutting down Calvin, is that the story where he had him shut down in a big game for a handful of yards?
he'll be great; just wait.

Except DRC plays man, and does not excel in zone coverage. He has great physical skills, but has not played any real competition in I-AA ball.
McKelvin excels in zone coverage, plays great man coverage, and has good ball skills. He will excel as a nickel back, and as for his vertical, so what. You can't draft specifically to stop one guy. You have to draft the guy that best fits this teams scheme.
And if the ref's actually called offensive interference once in awhile, Moss wouldn't be such an unstoppable force.

04-26-2008, 05:40 PM
Ok, they obviously WANTED to trade down, but this was the right pick because they were stuck at 11. Only problem I have is that McKelvin, despite his elite athleticism will not have an easy transition into a zone defense with his finesse game. Oh well. He has great intangibles and was one of the best pure athletes in this draft.

CB are you kidding me.....we need WR and TE's and we once again go with a CB.....i may be cutting off my buffalo bills tattoo tonight.
Don't make a rash decision. Buffalo can still geta quality WR and a quality TE with their next two picks. The Bills Pass D was a major concern. When they play the Pats twice a year and have their pick of the best CBs in the draft, they have to go CB.
If McKelvin and one other CB was taken before they picked, I think they would've traded down and gone WR. If just McKelvin was gone, they may have stayed put and drafted one of the other CBs or gone with Devin Thomas. I think McKelvin might have been the Bills #1 target. I am satisfied with this pick.

I really thought it was gonna be Thomas when they showed someone handing him a phone.
But I'm happy with McKelvin. I said it before that if he fell to us I wouldn't be opposed to taking him. And we did. This defense has a real chance to be very good.
It wasnt thomas they were handing the phone to it was Desean Jackson and I started screaming at my TV thank god he was not our pick.
I dont understand the pick tho, he prob wont start off the bat, maybe he'll play nickel and special teams...This is the hallmark of a dick jauron team, a great defense with a boring offense...hopefully mckelvin gets a bunch of int's and returns for TD, our offense is going to need the help.

Oh God! You guys have to be kidding me! We play a zone defense, so even though McKelvin's skills may not fit the system perfectly right now, we aren't going to go make a pick with the sole purpose of stopping Randy Moss. How ridiculous!
This was the right pick given the circumstances. A guy like Jordy Nelson will be a welcome addition in the 2nd round and if you guys knew this draft class you would know that plenty of high caliber DE's, TE's and other corners will be available in rounds 3 and 4.
Stop complaining and do your research rather than just saying Moss is taller, so we are in trouble. Foolishness

I think its a good pick considering he wasn't supposed to be there @ 11. Ideally i would've loved to have swapped 1's w/ Philly and picked up Sheppard in the process, then take Thomas with that pick, and then if it is for real, traded a 2, 4 , and 5 for Shockey. That would've solved our CB starter, big WR, and end zone threat TE and still left us w/ a 3 to draft depth.

no one can cover moss whats ur point...honestly tho its rare to see a cornerback over 6'0...taller db's tend to play safety, even so there aren't many cb's who are taller than that.
one thing i really dont like is that we never re-sign our 1st round cb's after their rookie contract

Smart pick. He will be starting at CB by mid-season, and is a big addition to special teams -- one of the top return men in the draft. WR will give better value in the 2nd or 3rd rds. Remember Andre Reed? Third round pick. Kudos!

The ONLY thing I dislike about this guy is only 4 picks in 48 college games played in. Plus its not exactly like he played against elite QB's with cannon arms. Outside of that his skills are outstanding and if he turns out to be "coachable" he could be a star.

I've been watching Leodis for the last 4 years and have enjoyed every minute of it. It is amazing to watch everyone in the stadium stand up in anticipation whenever he is back to return a punt or kick. The more the fans cheered and chanted, "Leodis.. Leodis.. Leodis..." the more pumped he would be and it seemed like he would fly even faster once he got the ball. He tied the all time record for kick/punt returns for TDs. He had several more that were called back on penalties and some other ones that were just a shoe string away from being TDs. After his sophmore year, teams pretty much just stopped kicking the ball to him. Who knows how many he would have had if they wouldn't have wussed out. Kind of like walking Barry Bonds. The punter from Georgia kicked the ball about a dozen rows deep into the sideline stands to keep it away from Leodis.
Speaking of Georgia, the "not facing tough competition at Troy" is in no way accurate. Since Leodis has been there, Troy has faced Florida, Arkansas, Georgia, GA Tech, Nebraska, LSU, Mizzou, Ok State, and the list goes on and on. There have been several big time WRs and QBs that he has faced off against and more than held his on. I think the official stat line from Calvin Johnson was 2 catches for 9 yards when Troy played them.
Character counts. Instead of going off to prepare for the draft, Leodis has stayed in school and is scheduled to graduate at the end of the semester. He is a confident young man and always plays with a chip on his shoulder, but he was never, EVER involved in any wrong doing at Troy. You will not pick up your morning paper and read about him doing something stupid to embarrass your team and community.
Lastly, on his lack of interceptions, as Trojan fans, we too were often dissapointed that he couldn't hang on to the ball or would end up knocking it down instead of catching it. Leodis realizes this is a weakness and has mentioned it himself in interviews as something he needs to and will work on. Another reason his int total is low is because teams avoided him like the plague. Our other CB lead the nation in interceptions this year mainly because opposing teams were trying to avoid Leodis at all costs.
You got yourselves a good one. You also gained a whole bunch of Bills fans from the Troy community. We support our pros and we're really happy to have an AFC team to root for. Here's hoping you guys get back to the Super Bowl real soon and play Dallas or the Giants so we can have an all Troy Probowler championship game.
