I've seen lots of "great pick!"
I don't know much at all about the player. Why is the pick good (other than us needing a DE)? What specifically about Chris Ellis do you all like?

His name is Chris Ellis. He played for Virginia Tech. He was just drafted by the Bills. Bills fans love the pick because the Bills just took him.

He's a good athlete and can provide a pass rush. He'll be a situtational guy who will come in to get after the QB. Also good against the run

He was the best DE at the combine for measurebles. He is rated as the quickest DE in the draft, and has the best overall speed at DE, other then Gholston, who is expected to be at OLB.

He's actually pretty poor against the run from what I've read, maybe one of the worst run defenders at DE.

Kiper just talked about him, and he said with some tweaking of his technique and he could be a pretty good pass rusher.

He had 8.5 sacks last year, and like lynchisthefuture said, he could become a good DE with some technique work.

So for this season we're still looking at the Schobel, Kelsay, Denney rotation with Ellis potentially coming in in passing situations?

Official Bio (http://www.hokiesports.com/football/players/2007/ellis.html)
http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/images/stars/three.gif Strengths:
Has a large frame with room to get bigger...Excellent speed with terrific quickness and a burst to close...A good athlete...Very strong...Stout at the point and does a nice job versus the run...Real active and has an outstanding motor...Is technically sound and plays with good leverage...Productive...Had a superb senior campaign.
Weaknesses:
Needs to put on some weight...Repertoire of pass rush moves is limited...Instincts are just average..Will have some trouble shedding blocks...Not real powerful..May not be an every down player...Character is a concern...Durability may be an issue.
Notes:
Has torn the labrum in his right shoulder twice...Suspended in 2006 after he was arrested and charged with resisting arrest and obstructing justice...He isn't flashy but you can't argue with the results..Will be a fine pro as long as he stays healthy and keeps his head on straight..Might be a better prospect than Darryl Tapp was.

Height: 6-4. Weight: 263.
Projected 40 Time: 4.67.
Combine 40 Time: 4.71.
Benchx225: 22. Vertical 30.5.
Projected Round: 3.
I thought Chris Ellis performed pretty well. There are character issues, but as a pure athlete, he's second-round material.
You have to like the speed that comes with his size. Can play both the 4-3 and 3-4. Had six sacks in 2005 but saw that total drop to 4.5 in 2006.

Exactly. Ellis is gonna be a situational pass rusher. Never heard he was great against the run, but we need a pass rush so I'm not terribly concerned.

I don't know that much about him either, but wasn't there a great defensive end we drafted in '85 that came outta VA tech as well? ;)

i like him because he is fast and has pruduction at the college lvl. Add some tweaks to his technique and he can be a solid guy. Not a pro bowl guy probably, but solid.

Why does The Sporting News rank him as the 20th best against the run at DE, in this years draft alone?

From what I read:
Strengths: Active hands, varies his pass rush, chases the ball persistently
Weaknesses: Not very strong, history of injuries, can be arrogant and has character issues.
Bottom Line: Needs to mature and avoid injuries but has pass rush ability. Needs to get stronger and improve vs. run.

Good rusher, fast, good motor. He's good, and he knows it so he plays with some attitude.

He has a horrible football body. He has very short arms and short legs when compared to his upperbody.
