View Full Version : I thought they'd pickup a center

If anyone sees a link showing the Bills sign a center, please put the link in this thread. I thought that was one of the relatively high priorities, and I doubt that they Bell will work as a center, so I'm hoping they find one of the un-signed players (did anyone sign the USC center yet?)

Several UDFA centers have already been signed. I'm not surprised that the Bills aren't looking for one for several reasons. First, they have Gaddis and they've been developing him for a year or two now. Secondly, this center draft was fairly weak. Thirdly, a center drafted this year probably wouldn't start until a year or two from now anyway.

With hindsight, I'm not surprised they didn't use a *draft pick* on a center since I see that so many choices went undrafted... BUT, I thought that would have been one of the first UDRFA signings. Gaddis may still be a development prospect but he's only been here one year as a UDRFA from Villanova and I think there are probably some others this year not yet signed that could already be an upgrade and ahead of Gaddis in development and NFL readiness(especially players from pro-style programs that play tough schedules) and even hopefully able to push Duke Preston for his roster spot (although, Preston is depth at the other inside positions).

Problem is, as much as we would like to see a replacement for Fowler, none of the C's in this draft would have been a potential replacement for him other than Pollack, which Indy took in the second.
So, we might sign someone, but they will likely take a couple years to develop.

There's still time to sign UDFA's. If not they still have Gaddis from last year on the practice squad. It seems like people liked his potnetial, does anyone have an update on him?

Sullivan from ND and Justice from Wake had decent grades, even if they didn't take his job they could have at least pushed him to become better.
I feel we should have drafted Omon in the 7th and used the 6th for Sullivan. We didn't need to draft Cox, could have had Bell in his spot.
Can't do much about the past, but for the near future we should keep an eye on who Polian cuts in Indy, he drafted 3 Centers, I doubt they will keep them all.

Had good grades, but both were still undersized (neither over 300 pounds). I still don't think they'd be much of an upgrade over Fowler at this point.

Fernando Velasco of Georgia would be a good interior o-lineman to pick up as an UFA. He is big, very strong, and can play either C or G. Some people had him going as high as the fourth round. Surely the Bills ought to be making every effort to sign him now. It would have been better still if they had made him their last pick in the 7th round instead of a low-quality CB who they clearly don't need and who almost surely won't be on the roster this year with seven other CB's ahead of him.

Sorry analyst, he already signed with the Titans, per http://www.kffl.com/hotw/nfl
I honestly think OBD likes Gaddis.

I really doubt the colts cut any of them. They have already said they plan on moving a few of them to guard, not to mention, they will have the ability to back up Saturday.

If you backup Saturday, does that mean you're Sunday?

That's sad news. At a minimum they should have added Velasco with their last pick. They kept saying they wanted competition at CB and now are overloaded with them. Why not have a little competition in the middle of the o-line as well? Let's hope Gaddis is ready this year.

yeah, they take 2 years to develope, which is why we should get one NOW... sooner the better. Gaddis is hardly a fure-fire answer to takeover, and even if he was he still needs competition.
and what about just plain GUARD? where are the backups there?
WE DON'T NEED A CENTER THIS YEAR. Yes, Fowler is the weakest link. Yes he is a UFA next year. But there were few options in the draft and Free agency. If there were a first day Center we wouldn't have drafted him b/c of needs at Cb/Wr. THe need is next year and with few other needs pressing, it will be taken care of. Preston and Whittle are capable backups. I don't want either as my #1 Center ever. The sooner we kick Preston to the curb the better but he fills a role as reserve Center. Quit whining about Center and enjoy the most complete Bills team we've had in a long time!

Ever heard of the practice squad?

Like I've said in quite a few posts C is dreadfully weak in this years class. Check out next years class though where 4 (Lugis, Mack, McNeil & Cauldwell) rate higher than ANY available this year. I dont know if anyone has signed Velasco the G, who also plays C, from GA. But he would be the ONLY guy I'd sign since if he cant beat out fowler at C he will still be great line depth.

what about the centre from USC, Spanos? He's be a decent pickup.

Drew Miller of Florida was a center this year and at guard last year (2nd tm SEC)- most of his weaknesses are technique related. Versatile and smart

Robert Felton may be the guy I was waiting to hear about. An UDFA, with versatility along the O-line, who could possible supplant Preston as a backup Center. He was signed by the Bills, to bring in fresh competition.
By bringing in a versatile guy, that means he may have a chance to take Duke's roster spot if he can show ability at the center position. I still like Whittle for depth too (and experience), and as mentioned by the other forum poster, this may also allow for releasing the Bills' long snapper if he could do those duties.

Felton has never played center. We'll have to wai and see if he has the smarts and initial quickness to handle center.

Do those sea creatures swim backwards? Cuz if they don't then Spanos is worth a pick as Fowler sure swims backwards after he snaps the ball.

It may have only been in practice (as an emergency measure for games) and a series in a game, but I know one of the articles mentioned that Felton had been tried at the center position.

THey'll probably HAVE to work Felton in to Center some, if they don't sign anyone else. Preston was so bad last year in preseason, i'm surprised he made the team. And Gaddis definitely needs competition at the least... nothing special there it would seem. I'm kind of surprised he isn't a C already based on his description, but i guess it's not for everyone. Snapping the ball first without getting knocked on your butt seems like it could be a learned skill though.

Why do they need another Center with Duke Preston on the roster? :rotflmao: He must be great in practice 'cause he's still around but never plays!
