This another Vince Young thread! Although somewhat related to the title. I don't post much on here mostly just read what you guys say, but I just couldn't help myself I had to chime in. Let me start by saying I love the signing. I'm a huge Fitz supporter and think he can get it done, but if he flops this year we can't just give up on the 2012 season, we need insurance. This situation makes me think back to the 09 offseason when Vick got out of prison many Bills fans were screaming for OBD to sign him. The situation is a little different, but the basic argument of why we shouldn't sign him was the same: he is a distraction, hes a bad QB all he does is run, and we already have our QB! The counter arguement for all in favor of signing him was all he does is win, he has been to the playoffs, and we don't have our QB! For the record I was in favor of signing the guy because like I said earlier, insurance if our QB flopped. I hope Fitz plays like he did in the first 7 games all season, I believe he can, and think he will, but I am happy to have insurance behind him. I'm going to list players who need to have a strong off-season and training camp in order to keep their jobs or take the next step. Input is appreciated and feel free to add to the list. I'm going to look at more of the under the radar type players as opposed to discussing the high-profile players because its done on a daily basis.

Tyler Thigpen QB- I was excited when they signed him last summer. The Vikings actually wanted him as their starter over McNabb so it seemed as if we got a steal. I'm not ready to give up just yet but he was a train-wreck last preseason. With the addition of Vince Young his time could be up in Buffalo very quickly.

Johnny White RB- Again, I liked when they drafted him in the 5th round last year due to their need of a no. 3 and developmental back. I was very disappointed with his preseason but his help from the backup lines didn't do him any favors. What was perhaps more disappointing was the fact that the Bills brought in Tashard Choice and played him more than White. When he did get a chance he looked miserable. I hope he has a good camp, if not he is probably out in favor of Choice.

Lee Smith TE- His role is as a blocker and we knew that when we claimed him from New England. I fully expect him to make the team but would like to see him establish himself as one of the leagues premier blocking tight ends in a league that is short on them. His role could be vital.

Chris Hairston OT- He may get beat out by Glenn and even if so it doesn't mean he has to have a bad camp. If he performs well and loses then it can still mean good things. He may be the right tackle of the future or even present (though I think Pears will hold off). If he doesn't start his role is still of the utmost importance. He will be our swing tackle and with our luck with injuries there is a great chance he plays. Still an exciting talent.

Chad Reinhart OG- He has a chance to win the starting job from Urbik and has proven to be another waiver-claim steal. He is a favorite of Profootballfocus.com and played in all 16 games last year. Even if he doesn't beat out Urbik he, like Hairston, will see the field at some point.

Derek Hagan WR- I was less than thrilled when they signed him last year. He seemed like just another guy and still may be just that. He really surprised me with his game in NE to finish the year. He looked like a competent depth receiver. He is a former 2nd round pick of the Phins so he does have talent. A good camp may push him to landing a role.

Alex Carrington DT- In Dave W's defense he has a chance to play a multitude of roles. He has the size and ability to be used like a Jason Jones, formerly of the Titans and currently of the Seahawks. It is make or break time for Big Al. He has a golden opportunity and needs to seize it.

Torrell Troup DT- Like Carrington he has a great opportunity ahead of him. Just because he plays behind two potential pro bowlers doesn't make him worthless. A rotation will be in place and if he can finally stay healthy he has a chance to be a nice rotational run stuffer. Needs a big camp to avoid bust status.

Arthur Moats LB- I am a bigger Moats fan than most and feel terrible that he has been moved around so much. I still believe in him. I am of the belief that if he was left to focus on being a situational pass rusher then he could be very productive at that. He came on at the end of last year but now it looks like he is going to have to learn the SAM. With a strong camp maybe he pushes Morrison or maybe if Merriman fails again they decide to let him fly off the edge on 3rd downs.

Justin Rogers CB- I am a huge Rogers guy. He brought explosion to the return game and got his feet wet at corner near the end of the year. He has a real chance to compete for the nickle role, in my opinion. At the very least he can emerge as an explosive kick returner and solid sub-package player. An exciting talent.

Da'Norris Searcy S-This off-season and training camp may provide more answers as to whether or not he will be George Wilson's successor or simply a depth and special teams player. He is an intriguing blend of size and athletic ability. In 2002 we had a good offense, but bad defense.
In 2003 we spent a ton of money in free agency on defensive players like:
Takeo Spikes, Sam Adams, and London Fletcher to improve the defense (then Laywer Milloy later).
Peerless Price was traded as our #2 WR so we didn't have a #2 WR to fill in...everybody said Josh Reed would be fine.
We had a 2 headed monster rushing attack with McGahee and Henry.
We had a vet QB that looked really good the previous year.
Our O-Line, WR2, and TE were the big concern.


The team went 6-10 because people double teamed Eric Moulds all day and Josh Reed couldn't get open.
Our O-Line stunk because we didn't sign any vets as backup and there were injuries.
We missed the playoffs...again...after starting off the season on fire.


I hope we learn from our mistakes and sign a #2 WR that can get open and some O-Line vets in case of injury.
I'd hate to see such talent wasted again.

But lets face the facts: VY didn't come to Buffalo because of Chan Gailey, David Lee, or the Buffalo fanbase. He came here because he senses that Fitzpatrick isn't a proven QB and is vulnerable to getting yanked if he fails to stay healthy or perform well.

Mark my words Bills Nation, if Fitzpatrick plays poorly during the preseason and Young plays great, VY will be the day one starter. If the Bills lose their first couple of games and Fitzpatrick looks awful, VY will start for the team.

Do I support Fitzpatrick as our penciled in starter? Not at all.
