    Default Double Standard : Players/Owners

Can someone explain to me why whenever the Owners show a profit on selling any part of the NFL rights, wether its Jerseys, DirectTV Package or Advertising rights, that has to go right into the pot and divided up to other teams and players and now asking for more of it to go to retiered players, etc..

Now when a player gets a call from UnderArmour or Nike etc and gets Millions to put his name on some thing (which is no less IMO, a product of the NFL) he has to contribute nothing, not one cent, not to the owners or other players.

    -Double Standard?-

The way it looks to me is that only the players are allowed to capitalize on the NFLs success not the other way around and the players havent invested 1 cent into the business.

You hit on something that the media has ignored.

The OWNERS are growing their business, i.e. playing games in Europe, building the NFL Network, splitting the draft into 3 days - in primetime, etc. All these activities were thought up and implemented by the OWNERS. But, the resultant increase in revenues flows to the players. Players get more but didn't do anything.

The players had a phenomenal deal over the last 5 years. Going forward the owners wanted to offer them a great deal. What is wrong with great, instead of phenomenal?

HOWEVER, I would assume that the sponsors are not rrelated to NFL revenue
I don't give my opinion, I administer it

sponsorship is an outside revenue for the players. It is like a side job. Wouild you expect a player to hand over money he made in his restaraunt business?

This is a very good point. The NFL makes money off the TV sponsors that get thrown into the pot but the same sponsor pay a player to be a spokesman and that player doesn't put that money into the pot. Just another reason to hate these greedy players.

i put thought into this and the answwer is simple..... the sponsorship between NFL players and NASCAR serve to ends of the perspective..... SPonsors buy the cars, finance it, yada yada....

the NFL players who sign with NIKE to promote are too attenuated for the NFL to claim as "part of the pot." when does sponsorship become too unrelated???? what if a player promotes pillows or maytag fridges, is that derived from the NFL?????

If he wasn't in the nfl he would not be a spokesman for that product. Also you can bet he is not the 53 rd. man on the roster, it will be someone already making millions. So yes it is derived from the nfl.

problem is... you can't prove that it is derived from NFL popularity. Obviously, the common sense approach says he signed his endorsements because of his celebrity status but that is not how the law works. Fact is, cam newton who just signed a huge deal with UA.... what if he doesn't go to the NFL, hwy should he pay any portion of that to the NFL?? or Sharpie with T.O.... where does it stop?? how far can the NFL owners reach into the lives of the players to get a "piece" of the pie

I don't think you'll be able to find any judge or lawyer who'll agree with you that you can't prove it is derived from NFL popularity. These athletes are in the ads wearing their pads, tossing a football around, what else would they be popular from? There is no technicality or loophole for them to hide behind, and 100% of EVERYONE can agree they wouldn't be getting these multimillion dollar sponsorships without the NFL.

That would not exist if the owners did not own the teams. Those sponsorships are so high because of how big the industry is.

On the same note how many former players get jobs they wouldn't otherwise get except for their NFL past. I am talking endorements, tv gigs, etc.

The NFL is not using the sponsorship to promote their brand nor are the products using the NFL.... they are using the player. A person's image is copyrightable and some images are more valuable than others. The NFL does not have the right to a person's image... that would be slavery in a sense....

however, they can work out a deal where a player's image used to make money may be assigned over to the NFL but I highly highly highly doubt the NFLPA would allow it....

but, whether a person became popular in college (because that is another argument, who says his name was due to the NCAA), or on the NFL stage has no DIRECT proof to divide up the earnings. It would never stand in court

So Andre Reed is now a culinary expert to have his own sauce? Or how about Thurman who is on radio & tv show and sells wing dip. Did he go to school for broadcasting and culinary school since NFL?

    Shall I continue?

ONLY TV contract money is in the pot for NFL owners to share, nothing else is

thats why the Cowboys make 100 million in proft more than Buffalo, their local revenue is so much larger

i was hoping to get an intelligent response.... anyway.... how about you i stop you with questions....

so, Andre Reed's profit will be subject to splitting with the NFL because he is a former player? is that what you are saying?? hahah... sorry for laughing ... i wonder on the NFL's tax return, there is a little itemized list where $19 identified as Andre Reed's BBQ sauce hahahhah....

and a less jokingly question.... what if a player, who sat the bench his whole career, opend up a pawn shop on Filmore Ave in buffalo... will he be kicking some up to the NFL as well??? or what if andre reed was a dog groomer haahahhahahahhhhahha .... what if, he became a male escort where he hid his money from the IRS, 3 years later the IRS found his hidden money, hit him for back taxes. CAN the NFL sue for a piece?

I think the point is that it is ridiculous that the players want more money that the NFL makes off of products that are not related to the players. So they put forth a scenario in which the NFL does the same thing to the players in order to balance things out. So you think the scenario is insanity as you should, why don't you thing the players request is insane?

Im upset with both sides, but at least the owners are vested, spending mad coin running a company THEY started. The players are getting paid MILLIONS for playing a game. Something Im sure anu of us would take far less to even have the ability to do. THe WE ARE the game from the players just doesnt fly. The NFL could fire every player & replace them all with quality players in 2 drafts. How many other football leagues have been successful? The arena league?
