Thumbs up Gil Brandt on Gabbert's pro day

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Six NFL head coaches, including four whose teams have picks among the top eight in next month’s draft, showed up here at Missouri’s pro day seeking answers to a few questions concerning quarterback Blaine Gabbert, most notably his deep-pass accuracy.

Gabbert couldn’t have done better had he borrowed Drew Brees‘ right arm. All the questions about his accuracy should start to go away after his workout in front of approximately 125 scouts, coaches and GMs.

He threw 50 passes, only one of which was uncatchable — a “go” route he overthrew to the left on his 36th attempt. He had one other pass, a deep post, that probably would have been intercepted in an NFL game. Other than those two passes, he showed remarkable accuracy at all points on the field. He also showed how athletic he is, good velocity on his passes, and an ability to get the ball out of his hand quickly.

His workout was outstanding — much better than Cam Newton’s at Auburn’s pro day on April 8. Newton had six passes that were uncatchable at his workout, although it was outdoors in windy conditions. I wrote after Newton’s workout that he should go No. 1 to the Panthers. I’m not so sure now.

Personally, I don’t think you could go wrong with either one of the quarterbacks. As Bucky Brooks explained in his War Room Debate comparing the two, it’s going to come down to the scheme each QB-needy team runs and which quarterback is the better fit.

The head coaches who were in attendance included Denver’s John Fox, Cincinnati’s Marvin Lewis, Tennessee’s Mike Munchak, San Francisco’s Jim Harbaugh, Minnesota’s Leslie Frazier, and the Jets’ Rex Ryan. It was the largest contingent of head coaches to show up at a pro day this year.

Other notables in attendance included Buffalo GM Buddy Nix, Tennessee GM Mike Reinfeldt and offensive coordinator Chris Palmer, and Lions GM Martin Mayhew.
What do you think Bills Nation? Should we grab him if he falls past the Panthers?

Ben: We're the good guys Michael.

If you go by Gil Brandt, he is still not sure if Newton or Gabbert should be selected first. So the real question is should we take either one if they are available. Either you find Gil credible or you don't. Its not logical that his recommendation on one player should sway you, but not on another. I probably would take Newton first if both available, and either one if only one were available.

Brandt either needs to learn what month it is or give me some upcoming lottery numbers.

His workout was outstanding — much better than Cam Newton’s at Auburn’s pro day on April 8.

The Bills apparently took Gabbert out for a date last night. I am sure he'll get a private workout with Nix and Gailey.

I would be happy if we took any of these guys gabbert, dareus, miller, peterson just give me one of them because the bills need all positions and those players are the best at there position in this draft .

Bucky Brooks put it best. Both should be good, so it'll depend on what a HC wants out of his QB. Buffalo is in a good position IMO. Carolina's gonna take one of them, Denver's gonna draft D with #2, so that leaves Buffalo with their choice of the other QB or a premier defender at #3. OR, Buddy could dangle the pick in front of QB-needy teams and see which one wants it the most.

Buddy will have three names on his piece of paper at the start of round 1.

Marcell Dareus, Von Miller and Blaine Gabbert.

Whoever is still available, the Bills will select.

I hope Dareus is there if not miller or peterson

I agree with you here, but it wouldn't surprise me to see Peterson's name also on that list. I was also considering AJ Green, but the more I think about it, the Bills are probably very comfortable with their receiver situation with Nelson coming on strong, Easley showing promise early in the year, the emergence of Stevie, Roscoe's success when healthy, and Lee Evan's veteran/deep threat presence.

i have a lot of respect for Gil and i know a lot of football people listen to him although i can remember him being the one touting Tyson Jackson first who worked his way from a top 2 rounder to #3 overall for KC. Everyone is saying Gabbert had a great pro day today and he is likely to go top 3 however i do think he is in the 10-15 as BPA

If we are going to take a QB at #3, I'll take him.

Gil Brandt isn't sure because he put all his eggs in newtons basket instead of doing the professional thing and letting all the guys perform.

After the pro day he has no option but to backpeddal as Gabbert is more pro ready than newton and should be the #1 overall pick. Now if Carolina ends up being dumb asses and taking the gimmick one hit wonder and Denver doesn't trade down or take Gabbert, I can see Ralph, Brandon, Nix, Gailey and everyone at OBD catching absolute biblical type hell for passing on Gabbert.

Gil Brandt is a good football man but I just can't get excited about Gabbert. For me, it's either the elite athlete Newton or the best passer Mallett. Gabbert just hasn't distinguished himself IMO.
I love the smell of charcoal in the morning.
