Default Vince Young already nailing down the #2 QB spot?

Good read, talks about David Lee helping fix Youngs mechanics like he's doing with Fitz. I kind of feel sorry for Thigpen. He seems like a good guy but he has next to no chance of beating out VY and making this team.

VY already nailing down No. 2 Bills QB spot?
    John Kryk - July 27th, 2012

PITTSFORD, N.Y. — It won’t be a surprise if Vince Young quickly pulls away in the battle to be the Buffalo Bills’ backup quarterback.

He might already be doing so.

Although head coach Chan Gailey said Friday that the team’s pre-season training camp doesn’t really begin until Saturday, when the first practice in full pads takes place, Young already has looked much better than Tyler Thigpen, who last year backed up starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick (That’s my photo of Fitz above left, with Young on Friday.)

If that’s only because Thigpen is stinking up the St. John Fisher College practice fields, so be it.

After struggling with second-team reps on Thursday, Thigpen tossed two ugly interceptions with the third-teamers in 11-on-11 drills on Friday afternoon. On one he locked onto a thoroughly covered receiver on a short route and threw it to him anyway.

Thigpen and Young flip-flopped between the second and third teams by design in the first two days of camp, and might continue to do so until a clear No. 2 emerges.

If current trends continue, that won’t take long............

I'd actually say that Thigpen has the edge as of right now.

VY has had the advantage since the day he signed in Buffalo because he's an elite talent compared to Thigpen. He's also a proven winner at both the college and pro level, and has led teams to the playoffs multiple times, something that even our starting QB has never done let alone Thigpen.

I really don't understand what some fans have against VY unless they are truly paranoid he might displace Fitz at some point this season.

Either way it's time to get behind him because he's not going anywhere.

I caught Buddy on the John Murphy show last night for a brief minute. Although he was clear that it is an opened competition for the #2 spot, he spoke about what VY brings to the table that is both very unique and hard to defend. If I had to venture a guess, I'd say they are just wiating to see VY do what they already know he can do and the deal is done.

QFT. What, you don't think that sucking less on the second day of camp while playing in tshirts and shorts doesn't nail down the job???

When a coach (coach, not fan) goes on record to say that there will be a battle for a backup QB and that one (we will call him Thigpen) is of the advantage because of he knows the offense and the other (we will call this one Young) is going to have to really word hard to get into the swing of things if he wants the job, all of this usually means that one has an advantage over the other. Vince Young may be physically more appealling to you and yours, however, there are other elements of being a professional Qb in the league. When a coach says it, you kind of have to believe its the case.

So, before you get all bent out of shape, your assessment of VY means nothing, nada, zilch to the actual situation in Buffalo. And unless your in process of becoming either the head or QB coach next week, it never will. Sit back, relax. Drink some kool aid and watch cartoons until the situation sorts itself out. At which time, a coach (again, not a fan) will announce the winner. And the loser will be sent away.

If that was true, then Young would have been named the #2 QB and Thigpen would already be gone. Gailey doesn't believe in keeping demoted QBs around on his team.

I think that they'd like to see Young win the #2 job because of his superior athletic ability. However, they aren't sure he can learn/function within the Bills offense, and they won't keep him unless he can. There's the cerebral part of playing QB in the NFL, and that's where Young has struggled in the past.

FTR, both Nix and Gailey never say anything bad about players. They always find positives.

I am neither for nor against VY. Young has some history and athleticism that impresses some (I get caught up in that as well), but I think the general thought (at least from coaches/scouts) is that he never translated real well to the NFL (due to style and/or knowledge) and that he is a a risk. Thigpen surely hasn't shown much either. All I can say is that's Chan's decision and his job could depend on it, so I defer to him. I will sit here and hope neither of them have to play for any extended periods.

Im quite confident that Vy wont be taking Fitz job. Sorry, I am not afraid of Vy doing that one bit. What you have failed constantly to see, is that all the reports indicate that Vy and Thigpen have looked horrible thus far. If Vy had it nailed down the day he signed.... there wouldnt be a competition because Thig would have already been released. I couldnt care less if Vy makes the team or not.

I get the sense that Nix would like to see VY win the #2 spot. He probably would not have signed if he did not think he was an upgrade. Thigpen knows the system much better than VY but has been in Gailey's system for years. Nix has said that VY is the type of player that will look better in games because of his physical ability to make plays when things break down. I tend to agree with him. I don't think VY will win the #2 job with his practice performances. He will have to win it by playing well in the preseason games. Or Thigpen just needs to continue to play himself off the team.

It's comforting to know we have two back up quarterbacks who are good enough to start for most other teams. If Fitzeroo gets hurt either Pigpen or Young are just as good. We wouldn't miss a beat. SUPERBOWL, here we come!!!!

he and a few others. it's an infatuation I have never seen here(aside from savioredwards, he was a real jock sniffer)for a player and most of them are new members one even as late as today that I don't look at as Bills fans but nothing more than vy fans. personally, not only because vy sucks do I not want to see him make the team but when he's cut these vy band-wagoners can leave with him.

How mad are you going to be when he makes the team?..

Your hatred for him just seems unmatched around here.. Are you related to Thigpen in some sort of way?..

I feel the same way about thigpen, they both suck. but vy really sucks and that's pretty bad when he ends up being beat out by thigpen so I wont have to worry about being mad but to be honest I wont be mad because if vy was by some miracle able to beat out thigpen, I'd end up feeling the same way I have for the last couple years, we end up having a back up who sucks and likely wouldn't see the field anyway. it's you and the vy cronies that will be mad and I'll be glad to see them fade off into the sunset right along with vy....

Wouldnt you want the better one of the two on the team?..

Been a Bills fan since birth, been a VY fan since his college days.. I'll still be here, count on that ****..
