Default First team O-line break down (MIN):

This breakdown is brought to you by the numbers 20, 2 and 14. They are the current amounts the Burglar is collecting per Takeaway, TD and Sack (respectively). This post is also brought to you by the Ball Burglar and Ball Burglars all over the planet.

Overall not a bad outing by the first team line.

    What really stood out:
-Still needs to knock off the rust in the screen game but that will come with timing, the Bills were a great screen team last year so I don't think there's much to worry about.
-I really think we need to see more of Smith on the field as a blocking TE, Chandler gives good effort but isn't that good at run blocking. Especially when he's pulling through on counter and power run plays.
-Glenn needs to be more aggressive but I think that will come when he gets more comfortable out there with his assignments. He can really get push on people in the run game.
-Hairston, by the end of the year, will be the starting RT. I really think he has the potential to be a dominant RT in the NFL.
-Urbik is looking pretty good out there at Guard and is a dependable Center if Wood goes down.

Not a great/dominant outing but certainly nothing to be worried about, play break downs as followed.

    1st and 10:
-21 Personnel (2 back/1 TE). TE motions across the formation from left to right, then back to the left. At the snap he pulls and acts as a lead blocker on a power play off the RT, gets a decent kick out block on a Safety who is trying to force the play inside by taking out Chandler at the legs. Pears goes to down block on LBer in the 2nd level, gets tripped up by the back side DT and misses the LBer who makes the tackle. Urbik gets a decent down block on the DT and doesn't allow penetration. Wood goes to down block on the backside DT but gets his head on the wrong side of the DT, on down blocks you need to get your head on the play side shoulder of the defender to cut off penetration (in this case the defenders left shoulder). Wood meets the DT head on and the DT slides off and trips up Pears. Levitre gets a great pull behind Chandler and seals off the DE soundly. Glenn cuts off the backside DE well enough and is a non factor in the play.

    2nd and 7:
-21 Personnel. Jackson motions out of backfield towards the TE to present a trips look. A quick screen is then thrown to him and he eventually picks up the first down, this is a hot read all the way by Fitz. You can tell by the way the lineman are zone blocking and not getting down the field looking for a LB/DB. The LBer who started to walk out on Freddy started creeping up and eventually Blitz, Fitz saw it all the way and got the ball to Freddy. Chandler has got to do a better job stalk blocking the DB though. He knows the hot read is an option but lets the DB skirt inside of him, he doesn't need to pancake him just square up better and get a piece of him, he definitely flirted with a block in the back penalty.

    1st and 10:
-12 Personnel (1 back/2 TE) set with Chandler off the hip of Smith on the right side. Chandler motions across formation to the left presenting a balanced look (no strength to a side). At the snap he pulls and becomes a second pulling blocker on a counter. It's a designed counter play off the TE which is different than one that goes off tackle. This counter play has more of a lateral point of attack and is designed for the RB to attack the sideline before turning up field in hopes that the LBers get picked up by lineman who are coming off a double team. Levitre does a good job of picking up the flowing LBer that comes around Smith's isolation block on the DE. Chandler is the 2nd man through and has got to look for that force player off the edge who's looking to force the RB inside. Smith gets good contact on the play side and forces a stalemate. Pears and Urbik do a good job of doubling their man and getting push but Pears loses his footing and fails to pick up LBer coming over the top. Wood gets a good down block on the back side DT and Glenn cuts off the backside end from crossing his face.

    2nd and 10:
-11 Personnel (1 back, 1 TE) w/ twins to the Left. Inside zone running play. Chandler fails to get push and gets stalemated at the line. Pears and Urbik try to "work the stack" (it's a pseudo double team where the playside Tackle and Guard work to get push on the 3 Tech and work towards the LBer over the top), they don't get any push on the 3 Technique and don't get the LBer flowing over the top. Wood and Levitre do a good job of "working the stack" on the weakside and passing off the DT allowing Wood to move towards the 2nd level. Wood sticks the backside DT allowing Levitre to slide over and take him. Wood needed to flatten out his angle when attacking LBers but good job getting there. Glenn takes his zone steps towards the play side to prevent anyone from crossing his face and then gets a piece of Allen to make sure he doesn't run it down from behind. Play was toast after Pears and Urbik failed to get push on the DT and not giving a seam for the RB who bounced it out.

    3rd and 11:
-10 Personnel (1 back, 0 TE). Twin WRs to both sides. Pears doesn't get enough depth in his pass set and has to turn his shoulders to try and run the DE past Fitz after his 2nd kick slide. Urbik gets a nice pass set and does a good job of getting a punch in on the DT who doesn't get into the pocket. Wood gets depth, perhaps a bit too much to look to help out the G's. He shortens up the pocket by getting that much depth. Levitre a nice pass set and gets a good punch in and doesn't allow pressure vs the DT. Glenn starts out well but gets distracted by Levitre's man for a split second allowing Allen to attack his outside shoulder. Glenn needed to continue getting depth with his kick slide and staying square so he doesn't expose a side for Allen to attack. He gets his hands up around Allen's shoulders but doesn't grab anything and gets called for a questionable holding call.

    1st and 10:
-12 Personnel (1 back, 2 TE). Double Tight on the left side of the line. (Hairston in at RT). Hairston gets good depth and stays square, gets his arms extended and punches the DE. Allows the DE to slip inside late, needs to keep moving feet and power step on the inside counter move. Urbik does a nice job of sliding down and picking up the DT on an inside move, loses him a bit late but ball already thrown. Wood and Levitre do a good job of picking up the 3 tech to their side who crosses Levitre's face after Levitre gets a good punch on him. Glenn does a good job of getting Allen's hands out of the passing lane by going to cut him, Allen was lined up on the outside shoulder of the TE to Glenn's side so he had to really move his feet quick to get at Allen.

    2nd and 8:
-11 Personnel (1 back, 1 TE). Chandler in the slot to the left goes in motion towards right, at the snap he pulls to the left to cut off the backside end on a zone running play. He goes to cut Allen, who has to leap over top of Chandler and takes him out of the play. Hairston does a good job of staying on his tracks and getting the DE to widen out opening up a seam. Urbik stays on his tracks and meets a LBer at the 2nd level but doesn't get much of a shot on him. Wood does a good job of staying on his tracks and getting movement on the playside DT. Levitre gets on his track and meets a LBer on the 2nd level cuts him off from the playside. Glenn does not get on his track and allows inside penetration by the backside DT who makes a play in the backfield. He really needs to move that playside foot first to cut that guy off or at least get a piece of him. Bad footwork by Glenn. Could have been a big run with the everyone on the first and second level covered up. Hairston is ultimately called for a block in the back (declined) after Spiller has to dance in the backfield to miss Glenn's man.

    3rd and 15:
Empty Backfield. Vikings bring a really nicely timed 4 men to a side Blitz and back off the backside DE in zone coverage. The backside DT over Levitre slants towards Glenn (who does a nice job picking him up) causing Levitre to hesitate. Wood sees the front side DT slant across his face towards Levitre and stays with him leaving Hariston and Urbik to block 3 men. Hairston takes the outside speed rusher upfield and gets nice depth on the kick slide. Urbik takes the inside rusher leaving a LBer free who knocks down a pass. With the way they timed it that Blitz is a Blitz that you won't recognize w/o film study on opponent. Good play by the Vikings D.

    1st and 10:
-Shotgun, 21 Personnel (2 back, 1 TE), Urbik in for Wood and Reinhart in at RG. Jackson motions out of backfield to the RT's hip. Zone read play to Spiller off the LT. Chandler takes a shallow angle towards the DE and the DE beats him cleanly outside, Chandler recovers and walls him off from coming back to the play. Glenn and Levitre double the 3 Tech and get good push, Glenn then goes to 2nd level to pick up flowing LBer and gets good push. Urbik and Reinhart get great push on the 1 technique, Urbik gets caught up on the DT because of the push Levitre & Glenn get on the 3 tech and can't make it to 2nd level. Hairston doesn't allow the DE to cross his face and tries to work to the 2nd level. Good 5 yard run.

    2nd and 5:
-Shotgun, 11 Personnel (1 back, 1 TE) with Chandler in the right slot giving a trips look. Glenn does a good job of getting depth and staying square to the DE. Levitre does a good job coming down to help Urbik with the 1 technique who got a good jump on the snap. Reinhart and Urbik do a good job of holding ground vs the 3 tech. Hairston gets good depth on the DE and when the DE tries to counter and go inside Hairston power steps to the inside and cuts him off, nice counter to the DE's counter move. Spiller steps up in the hole between Glenn & Levitre to pick up a blitzing LBer, gets a good shot initially but the LBer keeps his feet moving and pushes Spiller into the pocket. Decent pick up. First down completion to Nelson.

    1st and 10:
    -False Start on Glenn.

    1st and 15:
-Shotgun, Empty backfield with Chandler in the slit to the left. Glenn gets good depth but turns his shoulders too soon instead of staying square. When he turns his shoulders he has to run the DE past Fitz. Levitre stays square on the DT and starts a good hand battle with him but loses the DT late. Urbik & Reinhart neutralize the 1 Technique at the line and is not a threat. Hairston gets good depth on his kick slide cutting off the edge on the DE, the DE tries to counter inside and Hairston power steps inside and cuts off his counter move. Good footwork there by Hairston.

    2nd and 8:
-Shotgun, 11 Personnel (1 back, 1 TE) with Chandler in the right slot presenting a trips look. Chandler motions to the left across formation and then back to the right ending up on the hip of Hairston. Zone read play. Glenn gets a late jump but runs the DE out of the picture opening up a large hole. Levitre and Urbik work the stack well and cut off the DT allowing Urbik to take him and Levitre to move to the 2nd level where he gets good contact on a LBer. Hairston & Reinhart also work the stack well and are helped out by a blitzing LBer into their zone. Reinhart gets a good shot on the DT and allows Hairston to take over while he picks up the blitzing LBer. Chandler does a good job of not allowing the backside DE to cross his face. Big run by Jackson.

    1st and 10:
    -Delay of game.

    1st and 15:
-11 Personnel (1 back, 1 TE) Smith at LOS near LT and twins to the right. Play action pass. Reinhart pulls across formation to TE side and picks up the frontside LBer trying to play force technique on a run. Reinhart pulling draws LBers towards him and opening a nice throwing lane on the backside. Hairston does a nice job of initially selling the run and then peeling back to pick up DE. Urbik does a good job of picking up the 1 technique when Reinhart pulls. Levitre gets a good punch on the 3 technique and doesn't allow penetration. Glenn controls his B gap and makes sure no one comes through. Smith does a good job sealing off the DE. Nice catch and run TD by Jones.

    1st and 10:
-20 Personnel (2 back, 0 TE) Offset I with Freddy at FB. Nelson in the slot to the right but motions to the left slot. Play action to the left, bootleg back to the right. Good job by O-Line in firing off and selling the run action, no one crosses the faces of the OL and no inside penetration. Pass completed for 4 yards.

    2nd and 6:
-Shotgun, 21 Personnel (2 back, 1 TE). Chandler in the left slot, motions to the right past the center then back to the LT's hip. Counter tre play to Freddy. Freddy has Spiller leading with Levitre and Chandler pulling. Hairston and Reinhart get good push on the 3 technique. Urbik does a nice job of down blocking and filling for the pulling Levitre. Glenn sinks his hips a bit too much and even though the guy doesn't cross his face he eventually goes around the backside and tries to chase down the play. Levitre pulls around and goes to try and kick out the DE. The DE is slowplaying the action away from him and doesn't pinch down. Levitre has to recognize that and seal him instead of trying to kick him out. The DE strings out the run play but Freddy avoids him and picks up the first down.

    1st and 10:
-12 Personnel, Smith is on the LOS to the right with Chandler on his hip. Chandler goes in motion to the left giving a balanced look. Urbik & Reinhart do a good job of selling run action and letting their man go, Levitre pulls to the right and pulls the MLB and SLB towards him. Chandler releases to draw the WLB with him but the WLB sniffs out the screen and ducks under Chandler to make the tackle. Glenn has got to either let his man go or stay engaged. Urbik gets tripped up on Glenn's man and Urbik looks to be the one who is supposed to pick up the WLB. Loss of 5 on the play.

    2nd and 15:
-Shotgun, Empty Backfield. Glenn gets a nice pass set and stays square throughout his kickslide. Defender tries to spin inside but Glenn powersteps inside to counter. Levitre power steps inside to cut off the DT, loses him late but pass is thrown. Urbik gets caught off guard by the DT over Reinhart, Urbik is looking to help Levitre but the DT runs into him, with the help of Reinhart, knocking him off his feet. Reinhart gets a nice pass set and then moves with the DT as he attempts to slant inside, the DT hits Urbik and Reinhart pushes the DT over top of Urbik. Hairston gets a nice deep pass set and stays square to the DE. The DE attempts to bull rush but Hairston anchors and gets a nice punch in to halt the DE's progress. Incomplete pass.

    3rd and 15:
-Shotgun, 10 Personnel (1 back, 0 TE). Spiller comes up to chip the DE on the left side over Glenn but Glenn and Levitre do a nice job picking up a stunt between the DE and DT. The DT over Levitre pushes upfield on Levitre's left shoulder and the DE over Glenn goes to loop under the DT. It's a slow stunt by the DE so there was not much confusion on it. Levitre holds his ground and gets help from Glenn on Glenn's inside. The DE tries to loop around the DT but never gets there. Urbik does a nice job of getting a punch in on the DT over Reinhart and then looks to help out elsewhere. Reinhart power steps inside and thanks to the punch by Urbik is easily able to stay square to the DT and not allow any penetration. Hairston gets a nice pass set and stays square to the DE in his kickslide and easily keeps the DE out of the pocket. Incomplete pass.

VY and the 2nd team takes over on next possession.

I respect people that actually know what to look for in an offensive line or lineman.

Great job Shaunta. This is a lot of work.

You ought to start posting this stuff at Buffalo Rumblings.

If you happened to focus at all on Sanders later in the game, I'd be interested in what you thought.
To me, it looked like he was in control the entire time - except 1 total whiff ( a sack).

great write up. I'm looking forward to seeing this line mature. I think they'll pull together.

Excellent stuff Shaunta and I agree with your thoughts on Hariston, I've been saying all offseason he will be our starting RT by the end of the year. We finally have our bookends. Once Wood and Ubrik get settled in there spots this line will be better than last year.

Your opinion of Hairston and his potential at RT is welcome. Right tackle looks to be covered.

    Great work, thanks!!!!

What I have liked the most about our preseason schedule is how great it has been for Glenn to see Orakpo and Allen is successive weeks. That is great for his development. Shaunta you do a great job doing this stuff and you can tell it is a labor of love. Thanks.

Nice analysis as usual. Just out of curiosity, do you go to the game, watch it on TV or DVR or some combination of the three? You always catch such little details on each individual play....

I agree. Even if it is preseason play, it is great for him to get exposed to this kind of player early on.
