Thread: Trade up in 2013 Draft

Yeah I'd have to say at this point in time unless he gets destroyed in his bowl game and flops at the Senior Bowl (which will be aired by NFL Network on 1/26/2013 at 4 pm EST) then there is almost no chance of him being a mid round 1st and there is almost zero chance he makes it to round 2 especially now that he is being talked about as possibly being the best QB in this draft class.

I saw somewhere from Mel Kiper that the Chiefs(if Pioli stays) like Glennon, so they would consider going Joeckel, Star Loteualei or even Manti, which, if we have the 4 pick, could put Geno in our reach easily
Leave it to Chan Gailey to keep one of the leagues most dynamic game-breakers in Spiller tamed. The difference between the two backs is night and day, but so much for "getting the ball in Spiller's hands more" Theres no question that Spiller would rival the numbers of Arian Foster and Adrian Peterson if given a full scale of work. As it stands now, Spiller is stuck as a RB2 option in a timeshare role

Wont edit until Bills make playoffs

Glennon being liked by Mel Kiper is a bad sign. Kiper has no clue how to talent scout and just goes by the vibe surrounding players. Glennon is decent but not a top 32 QB in this league.

He's a no doubter for #2 QB in this years draft. If we want him we are going to have to jump 2+ teams that are also looking for a QB. We will likely get stuck with picking a guy like Aaron Murray, Nassib, or Dysert who is a Blaine Gabbert like bust. This could be very bad news for us....we all need to hope Glennon doesn't start jumping up draft charts.
Look at the list below from last year's draft:

    1st Round
    ---
    #1 - Andrew Luck
    #2 - RG3
    #8 - Ryan Tannehill
    #22 - Brandon Weeden
    ---

    2nd Round
    ---
    #57 - Brock Osweiler
    ---

    3rd Round
    ---
    #75 - Russell Wilson
    #88 - Nick Foles
    ---

    4th Round
    ---
    #102 - Kirk Cousins
    ---

Now obviously the best two QBs in last year's draft were Luck and RGIII, and outside of them there was not a 'great once in a generation' prospect. Don't get me wrong, there were solid prospects but not 'great' prospects. But what have we seen this season?

The Dolphins could have sold their near future by trading up for RGIII - who was the second best rookie QB heading into the draft, and in his rookie year has been the best rookie QB this year - but they decided against it and went with Ryan Tannehill, who let's be fair was a reach with their number #8 pick. But fair play to them, they went with him and put him into the starting position and the lad has done a good job with very little. He doesn't have an elite receiver like Andrew Luck has with Reggie Wayne; or very good receivers like Russell Wilson has with Syndey Rice and Golden Tate; his best weapons are Brian Hartline and Devone Bess, neither of whom should be leading receivers for any team. So in reality he has done a very good job to get them to 7-8, and he's shown promise that he will go on to become a very good NFL QB.

The Browns went with Weeden who has been productive, but perhaps a bit interception prone. Though as a mid-to-late first round pick he has done 'ok', and at a better team, with a better coaching staff, and better weapons to throw to, he could have done even more. Like Tannehill, not a fancy pick, but he's done well and they didn't have to trade the crown jewels for him.

Then we have Russell Wilson, who arguably has been the second best rookie QB from last years draft behind RG3. His performances so far have been excellent, having led them to close fought victories against the Packers and Patriots (granted at home), they won in Chicago, and they blew the 49ers away at home and came here to Buffalo and blew us away. He's been accurate. He throws a decent amount of TDs. His movement is top notch and picks up decent rushing yards and TDs. All in all, for a 3rd pick the lad has clearly done very well for himself. Yet another unfashionable QB who has proven doubters wrong so far.

Nick Foles has taken over a tough job in Philly, but he's done a solid job. In preseason some fans wanted him to be named their starting QB, and since taking the reins he has shown enough potential to deserve being given a chance to be their starting QB next year. He's throw a 79 QB rating, completed a decent amount of his passes, and shown above average leadership. He is nowhere near the finished product, but with the right coaching he could become a very good QB, especially with the weapons he has at his disposal in Philly.

Now that's without mentioning the backup in Washington of Kirk Cousins who has stepped in for RGIII and done a very good job, and according to many if Kyle Shanahan gets his first head coaching gig will see Cousins go with him. Perhaps this lad wasn't ready to start, but he's shown signs that he could be a good NFL QB from his performances so far, but he needs time.

But what am I saying? What's my point?

My point is twofold: a - you don't need to pin your hopes on the so-called top prospects; and b - you don't need to sell the family jewels in order to secure a franchise guy.

Think about it, the Dolphins and Seahawks could have traded up to get RGIII but their decision not to and select their respective QBs has worked. The Bengals in 2011 could have traded up to get 'their guy', but they went with Andy Dalton in the second round, an unfashionable pick who has led his team to the play offs in back to back years. So sure, getting Glennon or Geno would be nice, but just because they are supposedly the best two prospects doesn't mean they will turn out to be the best two guys from that draft. For me, I would rather see us reach in the first round to get Tyler Wilson, Barkley or Glennon; or wait until the second or third round to get someone like Nassib, Murray, Dysert, Bray or Emmanuel.

Glennon will either go late in the 1st round or maybe even in the second. The only can't miss QB in this draft is Geno Smith. Geno is the real deal and the only one worth trading up for. But I don't think KC will trade the first pick, I think they will keep the pick and take Geno. KC needs a quarterback and Geno is by far the best one. No other QB in this draft even comes close to being in Geno's class. Last year you had Luck and RGIII. This year there is only one with franchise ability and that's Geno Smith!

What if the Jags finish 2-14 to grab the first pick and the Chiefs finish 3-13 to drop to the second pick?

In that situation the jags might be open to a trade. Probably be like two or three years worth of first round picks.
